Getting Married in the UK requires Giving Notice at A Local Registry Office.
So, what exactly does it mean to Give Notice of Marriage and How is this carried Out?
If you are planning on getting married you must give notice of your intention to get married and this needs to be at your Local Registry Office regardless of whether you will be getting married there or elsewhere in the country.
Giving Notice must be made with 28 days notice of the marriage taking place within England and Wales and the Wedding must take place within 12 months of giving notice and the couple must both be resident in the area for at least 7 das before notice has been given.
There is a fee which is applicable for giving notice and this is currently £35 (2021 prices) for UK citizens.
Appointments need to be made with the Registry Office to give notice and at these sessions each person is interviewed and asked a number of questions, it is important to take this process seriously and guidance will be given throughout by the registrars.
Documentation must be provided by each person at their interview including evidence of individual’s Names and Addresses, Nationality as well as their date of birth and if any of the partners have previously been married or in a civil partnership they must show proof that these have dissolved or ended, the types of documentation that can be used to do this include Passports for an up to date list it is best to check Government websites.
There are additional rules for those who are not UK Nationals and it is advised to check the Government websites for the current rules on this.
Once notice has been done you will be given authority to get married from the Superintendent Registrar and you will then be able to get married at any Registry Office or local authority approved premises.
