Things To Consider When Booking A Fish And Chip Van Or A Mobile Caterer For Your Wedding

Selecting a Mobile Caterer for your Wedding is a big decision, food is a big part of your special day so you need to be sure that you have researched your options and your Caterer to ensure they are the right choice for your day.

Below are some ideas of things to look for when selecting your Mobile Caterer.

Check Out Their Credentials

Please make sure that you ask your Caterer for documentation and certifications. A professional company should have no problem in being able to provide these.

Every Food Business by law MUST be registered with a Local Authority and after a short period of time they would be subject to an EHO inspection which leads to a Food Rating this is rated 0-5 which 5 being the highest, details of which can be found on the internet. You can also find listings for each Food business ratings on Government Ratings websites.

All Caterers should be qualified in Food Safety to a minimum of Level 2 as required by law, this includes all staff that are handling food, some Caterers may have higher level qualification particularly if they are managing the business.

You must make sure that your Caterer has Public Liability Insurance, most businesses will have a minimum of £5m cover, if you are unsure ask them to provide proof of this to you, it's better to be safe than sorry.

A Caterer should adhere to a Safety Management System so should be able to provide Risk Assessments covering Health & Safety, Food Safety and Fire Safety this would show you are dealing with a business that takes safety seriously.

There are plenty of Food Related Organisations that Caterers may be a members of and they can easily provide you with proof or a membership number that you can check out.

Other documentation which may be relevant to certain businesses such as some Equipment Certifications, DRB Certificates, Operating Licenses (where you have vehicles or combinations of vehicles and trailers over 3.5t), or Alcohol Premises and Personal Licenses.

Ensure They Can Handle Your Wedding

We can all say that we handle something and it's difficult to actually have proof of that.

Consider the setup of the Catering Company, look at photos of Vans/Equipment that they have. Look at the types of events they attend and how they present themselves.

A Van with a tabletop or floor length basket fryer will cook fish and chips much much slower than a Chip Shop Range Fryer as the equipment is not designed in the same way.

Consider if the Caterer has the skills and capabilities to cater effectively at your Wedding, this relates back to their credentials, can the Caterer make you feel confident that they can keep up with the demands of what you need in terms of numbers and queuing.

Ask questions about how serving is completed and how many people they can serve in an hour, an experienced caterer would happily share this information with you and explain why this is so. Some types of food can take longer to prepare no matter how quickly the Caterer is working.

Don't be put off by a smaller scale businesses, with a bit of planning and experience 2 people can work just as fast as 4 people. They will also give you a personalised service and you will probably be served by the person you first communicated with rather than staff sent along in their absence.

Check out Websites, Social Media Pages and Supplier Listing Websites for more details and if you can read any feedback from previous customers they are often truthful and to the point on the service they received.

There is no harm contacting past customers/venues directly and asking them any questions that you have.

Are You Getting The Best Deal?

Pricing is a subjective subject!

You cannot compare a 10ft Burger Van Trailer to a Vintage Citroen HY Van that provides Gourmet Burgers, it all depends on what your budget is and what you are looking for from your caterer.

There are lots of different types of Caterers out there to choose from so its best to start with what your budget is, you might come across a van or trailer that completely fits your theme and so you are prepared to take money from elsewhere in your Wedding Budget to pay for it!

Just remember that Caterers are not just paying to run a Trailer or Van buy stock and get to your event, they are running a business which is expensive and they have to have prices to reflect that.

You should also consider that some Catering Companies have full time businesses and can concentrate on their craft whilst others work weekends around their full time jobs, again their offerings will reflect that.

Take a look at past customers of your Caterer have they only worked at small local public events or have they worked with local or national businesses or brand names, just remember that corporate clients can at times have much higher expectations and regulations to follow in terms of business conformance so can only work with Caterers with certain credentials.

An important point to consider is of course the food itself, the quality you are being offered and how this is presented. There is a difference between being served using a Polystyrene Tray or a Cardboard or other Biodegradable Tray that costs more money. Ask the Caterer where their food is sourced from and which suppliers are used, bear in mind whilst everyone would love to be able to provide locally sourced product this may not always be what is feasible if you have large events to cater for.

Common Questions

Please find below a list of Common Questions when booking for your Wedding with The Hungry Plaice
  • How do I reserve my date?

When you contact us we will check your date and time is available. We will then send you a quotation with our Terms and Conditions, this will give you all you need to know about your booking.

If you wish to proceed we will require a 10% deposit to secure your event date and time.

  • Why is the Deposit Non-Refundable?

Deposits taken from customers at the time of booking are Non Refundable and there are reasons for this.

We have a large amount of administration time within our business and when taking bookings we may have paid a website to receive leads from clients.

Aside from the costs outlined above when we have taken a booking from a customer we will then turn away other prospective clients for dates that we may not fill in the future.

  • Why can't I reduce the number of guests on my booking?

We accept events based on the number of guests that are outlined by customers at the time of booking and whilst the number of guests can be increased we do not allow a reduction in numbers.

The number of guests are a factor that drive the cost charged for the event and also aids our business arrangements and factors around food wastage.

At certain times of the year we are extremely busy and have to turn away potential customers for dates where deposits have been taken.

If we were to allow numbers to be reduced this would also affect the price quotation.

  • Why are the prices at The Hungry Plaice higher than other companies?

The Hungry Plaice provides a Premium service. We have Uniqueness in our vans and can claim there are no other Food Vans in the UK like ours.

As we are running a business there are a lot of costs to cover. Our Food Vans are very old and require lots of attention to maintain and keep running. As they are of a certain age spare parts are very rare and therefore become more expensive day by day.

Our products are of very good quality. We only use Quality Ingredients from market leading suppliers to ensure our food is fresh and delicious for your guests.

  • Can The Hungry Plaice cater for Dietary Requirements?

At The Hungry Plaice we have set items to allow us to Cater for Vegan. Vegetarian, Gluten Free, Dairy Free and Religious requirements.

We do ask that Customers make their guests aware of our Food Safety Policies. We include an Indemnity Form with quotations to reflect this.

We will provide an Allergen Chart with our Quotations which lists Allergen types in our products.

If you are unsure please contact us for further information.

  • Will the Vans require any Power or Water?

Our Vans are self-sufficient. We carry our own cold and hot water and have a small silent Suitcase Generator that makes a minimum amount of noise.  We will welcome access to power if this is available.

  • Am I able to choose which Van comes to my event?

We have two Ford Transit Mark 2 Vans these are the same in shape and are both called "The Hungry Plaice", we cannot guarantee which van will be taken to your event and available for your date.

The vans require lots of maintenance and we have to ensure they are both kept on the road and used evenly to ensure continuity in our business.

  • How long does Setup/Pack Down take?

One of our Strengths is that we have Self Sufficient Vans and we have aligned our processes so there is minimum disruption when we are Catering at Events.

We believe our Clients should spend their time enjoying their event and not worrying about the caterer!

For an average sized Wedding we can setup and serve piping hot fresh food within 30mins of arriving on site for our Fish & Chips Van and our Pack down time is around 30mins.

  • Can we add decorations to the Vans?

We appreciate that our Vans may not quite fit into your Wedding Theme so we would be happy for you to provide us with Decorations for us to put around the Van. We would ask that this would not include anything that may cause damage to the van including anything that may knock against the side of our Vans when there are windy conditions.

  • I would like to add something different to the menu would this be possible?

We have a Standard menu but we are aware that there may be something different that you would like us to cater for your special day. For example you may wish to have Gravy instead of Curry Sauce for your Fish & Chips.

Please get in touch and we can discuss your requirements.

  • We would like a quick service at our Wedding, how fast do you serve?

We know that time is of the essence and we have aligned our processes with this in mind.

Our Fish & Chip Vans have full sized Fryer Range Inside which allows us to cook Fresh Fish and Chips quickly and efficiently ensuring queues are kept to a minimum. We are able to serve approx 100 people within 60 minutes!

  • Some guests did not turn up so can we have the leftover food?

We are aware that in some circumstances there may be food left over.

We are happy to supply you with any cooked leftover food however we will not accept any responsibility on how this is handled after we have left site.

  • Does The Hungry Plaice offer any tasting sessions?

Unfortunately The Hungry Plaice does not offer tasting sessions as we woud not have the time to fit these in due to our busy schedule.

We primarily work at Private Prepaid events but we may attend a public event where you are more than welcome to come along and meet us. Please email to see if we have any events lined up or have a look at our Social Media pages for news.

  • How can The Hungry Plaice help to cut down the waste at my Wedding?

We take pride in being a Business where we can take the environment into account.

Whilst we cannot make all our items recyclable we can try as much as we can to cut down on waste and encourage customers to recycle.

Therefore we do not bring outside bins and ask that customers arrange for collection of items  used by guests to aid recycling.

Our Trays and Wooden Cutlery are Biodegradable and we use paper napkins and greaseproof paper, these items make up a significant proportion of waste from guests and  and we will continue to look for more ways in which we can keep our waste to a minimum.
