Recent changes to the Marriage Act in England and Wales are seeing big changes to the Traditional Weddings.
So what changes do Brides and Grooms now getting married need to be aware of?
The Marriage Certificate is a legal record which records the details of a Wedding taking place, this includes the date and place the Wedding was held, the names of individuals who got married, their occupations, the Wedding witnesses, the registrar that married the couple and historically the father’s names of the wedding couple.
These certificates are published by the General Registry Office and are made publicly available.
Photos of Wedding couples signing their Marriage Certificate have long been a tradition to Wedding in England and Wales, although legally “actually signing” the register could not be photographed and these photos were actually staged!
On the Wedding day the couple have been given the actual certificate to take away and they were able to then order copies of the certificate if they so wished.
Recently there have been changes to the process of the Marriage Certificate which overhauls laws that have date back some 200 years.

The changes are to the creation of an electronic register, the creation of a “marriage document” for church of England Weddings and a “wedding schedule” for civil ceremony and also entry of parents of the wedding couple on the register.
The “Wedding Document” or “Wedding Schedule” will be issued on the day of the Wedding and this will then be sent to the Register Office and the details taken and recorded on the electronic register after which an actual certificate is then issued to the couple.
The details on the documentation will also change to account for the names of the parents of the wedding couple.
As well as the Father’s details which have historically been included on the documentation, each couple can include up to four parents who may be their Natural/Adoptive/Step Mother, their Natural/Adoptive/Step Father or those who hold legal parental orders. These details will need to be considered prior to the Wedding day so that they can be included on the register as they cannot be added later to that date.
The changes are expected to provide a more robust and efficient service and are being brought in line with a more modern day culture.
