The House of Commons has recently passed a bill to increase the minimum marriage age to 18.
This means that the laws allowing 16 and 17 year olds to marry with the consent of their parents will end.
The laws around Marriages are set to change soon in light of the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Bill which is currently being considered by the House Of Lords and is expected to be made into law soon.
Currently the law stands that a 16 or 17 year old can marry with the consent of their parents and this is set to change with the age being increased to 18.
The measures will also stop youngsters being able to marry in Scotland and Northern Ireland and it is thought these changes will have a big effect on Gretna Green which has long been a place where runaways teenagers have fled to get married there where the requirement is two witnesses required and assurance from the individuals that they are free to marry.
Ministers have long been campaigning to see an end to the illegal practice of coercing youngsters into arranged marriages which has long been seen as the norm in some cultures across England and Wales.
The bill will also make it an offence to carry out any conduct which tries to coerce a child into marriage and this would carry a prison term of up to 7 years.
