Wedding Vows are an intrinsic part of the Wedding or Civil Ceremony and these are spoken during the ceremony to signify the vows and promises that the couple take during their marriage.
These days people like to create their own types of vows to make them more personal to themselves and their partner so where do you need to start when you decide to write your vows?
The Registrar or Religious Figure who you have chosen to marry you will be able to give you some guidance on this and are likely to give you these written vows so that you can choose between them, they may have some ideas for vows you could write or choose and they might have some guidelines on what they expect you to say or not to say.
As a starting point be aware that there are two elements to your vows, firstly what must be spoken legally and secondly what personal vows you will allowed to add.
Legal Wording For Vows
In England & Wales there is wording that must be spoken in order to create the legal binding wedding these are the “Legal Declarations” and “Contracting Words” and there are some choices between exactly what can be said, these words are fairly well known so should not come as a surprise to anyone.
At this point I would suggest you don’t get anxious about all this because the person marrying you will ask you to repeat the words so you won’t need to learn these off by heart on a day where you are likely to be super nervous!
Legal Declarations
There are three different types of Legal Declarations to choose from these are the Traditional, the Modern or the Simplified versions.
Traditional
“I do solemnly declare that I know not of any lawful impediment why I (your name) may not be joined in matrimony to (your partner's full name)”
Modern
“I declare that I know of no legal reason why I (your name) may not be joined in marriage to (your partner's name)”
Simplified
“The Registrar asks: "Are you (your full name) free, lawfully, to marry (your partner's full name)" You reply "I am"
