Some Exciting Trends for Weddings This Year!

If you are planning on getting married this year I am sure you have been poring over Websites, Magazines and Social Media to get ideas of what you want on your special day...

what exciting hot trends are going to be around this year?

1. Having a Sustainable Wedding

This is a given nowadays we all want to do our bit to keep our waste down and Wedding days should be no different.

With the rise of the awareness of pollution, couples are making sure that their Wedding are more Eco-friendly with minimal impact on the environment and this idea extends to all aspects of their day from what they are wearing to rubbish accumulated during the day.

There are so many items that could be purchased second hand or hired which would not only save money but would also be in keeping with having a more Sustainable Day, these could be Table Decorations, Seating or Wedding Outfits for example, the second hand market in the UK is huge and there are bargains to be found on Auction Websites, Facebook and in Charity Shops, anything bought could be sold after the day for someone else to use them rather than these being kept and never used again.

As a conscious couple you could ensure have a plastic free Wedding using glass drinks containers instead of single use plastic cups, asking guests not to give you any presents containing any kind of plastic.

Sustainability should encompass all aspects of your day and this should include any suppliers that you choose to have on site, ask your bar caterers to implement your non plastic cup idea and check that your Food Caterers are using biodegradable items when serving their food.

2. Charity Donations

In keeping with the sustainability theme, charity donations have become more prevalent at Weddings where rather than expecting presents from guests couples are instead requesting that donations be made chosen charities. There may be a special charity that is close to the couple’s heart or a range of charities they like to support.

Gone are the days when there was a long Wedding List at the local department store particularly now as people are living together before they are getting married and they probably have everything they need before they get married anyway.

It is nice to think that we can use our special day to give a thought to those less fortunate than ourselves rather than asking for more that we can live without!

3. Catering for Guest Dietary Requirements

Diets are changing and there is a big movement towards Veganism around now and this is having an impact on the choices couples are making for their big day and like a recent Golden Globes awards ceremony some individuals are even choosing full Vegan menus.

This year will see a greater awareness of guest expectations and their food choices will be part of this so couples need to make sure they understand if any of their guests have dietary requirements and ensure their catering can reflect this.

At The Hungry Plaice we ensure we keep our customers at the heart of what we do and cater for dietary requirements whenever this is requested!

4. The Wedfest

As a Mobile Catering Business at The Hungry Plaice we are seeing this term used quite frequently when being asked to provide quotes.

Weddings are becoming more than just traditional ceremonies and parties afterwards couples are trying to create more informal settings so their guests can enjoy a more relaxed casual affair and one way of doing this is creating a Festival feel throughout their wedding day.

In our experience of Catering at these sorts of Weddings we have seen things like Tepees, Hay Bales, Open Fire Pits, Acoustic Entertainment and Family Play areas.

At some Weddings we have attended there is no formality to outfits, we have even seen people walking around at a Wedding Reception dressed in Shorts and T-Shirts!

These Wedding Festivals are often a more chilled out type of day where people are much more relaxed and there is less formality to the day.

5. Splash of Colour

Weddings will be full of colour in 2020!

Colours will be used more widely in Weddings this year and rather than sticking to a set colour theme, couples will be integrating a range of colours to make up their Wedding themes.

We have seen more colourful displays at Weddings in recent times and rather than sticking to safe pastels couples are incorporating brighter colours into their décor.

6. Posh Photo Booths

Think Kardashian here……they are always in the news and when they have a party, they use Photobooths for their photos and a lot of the time these photos are shot in Black and White.

Now there are photo booths and then there are photo booths! We’ve seen a lot of different examples at Weddings we cater at from Inflatable ones to Photo Booth corners setup with a camera on a tripod, guest will gravitate towards them as they add a fun element to the day.

Whereas the Selfie Photo Booth was provided in the past with a range of props to make funny photos this year’s Photo Booths will be posher, more refined and full of elegance.

7. Large Floral Table Displays and Flower Walls

Flower Decorations will be bigger and better, there is certainly an influence here from the celebrity world including the aforementioned famous family for this.

Flower Walls are more popular than ever providing a dramatic backdrop for photo corners, the effect of the flowers look more real and dynamic than any sheet background provided by a photographer which is why these are being used more extensively.

There is also a trend for bold large Flower Table Displays that fill a huge section in the middle of tables and drape way over the sides sweeping along floors which give a theatrical and beautiful feel to table settings, these types of decorations easily complement the trend for Grazing or Banquet style eating.

8. Having more than one photographer

Yes, I know this is an extravagance but actually it does makes sense!

On our travels we have seen more than one photographer at a wedding, often there is two and sometimes a team of individuals taking photos.

Having more than one photographer allows for there to be a focus on the couple and another to capture the special moments amongst the guests that the couple won’t see!

To keep costs down you could easily ask one of your guests to be the additional photographer for the day you might have a budding David Bailey at your local college who would be more than happy to build on their portfolio work by covering your Wedding Day.

9. Interactive Entertainment

Wedding couples are trying to think of more and more ways to keep their guests entertained and there is a trend for different more interactive entertainment.

We catered at a Circus Themed Wedding and the setup was just amazing, there was a Big Top which served as the main tent where there were tables and chairs were setup, outside there were people on stilts, a coconut shy, unicycles and a hook-a-duck stall, everyone had something they could do and they were all getting involved.

Rather than just hiring a bar, you could hire a mixologist to teach your guests how to mix their own cocktails which would be a better talking point among your guests.

I have even seen someone walking around holding an open plastic umbrella from which pretzels are attached so guests can grab one as they move past!
