Wedding Receiving Lines Might Seem Quite a Formal Thing For Today's Modern Weddings And They Have Their Advantages And Disadvantages.

So Just What Is A Wedding Receiving Line?

A Wedding Receiving line is a line of people in the Wedding Party who stand and greet each guest at the Wedding.

These can be done after the ceremony or at the Reception venue and are a quick way of making sure each and every guest is thanked for attending and welcomed on the day.

This also gives guests the chance to say hello to the Wedding Couple and pass on their congratulations.

A Wedding Receiving Line is very useful and will ensure that each guest has been given the opportunity to speak to the Wedding couple who may find themselves distracted during the course of the day and might not otherwise get the chance to get round and see everyone.

Who Should be in the receiving line?

The Wedding Receiving line should include the Wedding Couple and the parents of each person, traditionally the formation would look like this

Obviously changes can be made to the line up to suit the couple and their family or friends circumstances, for example some couples may choose to include the Grooms Men and the Bridesmaids or there may be Step Parents as well.

What Will They Talk About In The Wedding Receiving Line?

Each guest will be received by those in the Receiving line and it is important to warmly welcome each guest and have a few words with each one as they pass through, guests may also want to pass on their own congratulations or say thank you for their invite.

You may find that guests will want to pass their presents and cards to you at this time so have a table nearby which you can put our presents aside and you don’t end up with an awkward time of hold a number of items whilst you are talking to your guests.

Try not to spend too long talking to someone as there may be quite a lot of guests to get through particularly if it is a large wedding and be mindful that there will be more than one person talking to each guest as well.

It can also be an opportunity for the Wedding Couple to make any introductions for new people that may not know their spouse.

Are There Alternatives To The Wedding Receiving Line?

The Wedding Receiving Line could be construed as being quite a formality at a wedding and it may not be suitable where the day is fairly relaxed but there are other ways of welcoming each guest.

Be prepared that some guest might not line up and will walk straight through into the reception venue so you may not be able to greet everyone, there will of course be others who could get distracted if they are tending to young children for example.

The Bridal Party could wait until everyone has sat down at the reception and walk round each table to say hello, they could also move around whilst the guests are assembling and greet everyone they can.

A good idea would be to ask certain members to do this on behalf of the wedding couple should there be a large number of guests or if they are busy taking photos.
