The minimum age of getting married has long been a topic of discussion, with the rise in explotation of chidren in some areas of society a large number of chlidren were being forced into arranged marriages and the change in law has sought to overcome this.

In England and Wales for some time 16 to 18 year olds have been able to get married with the consent of parents. This is an issue which has caused a good deal of controversy.
In Scotland the age at which girls can marry with parental consent was raised from 16 to 18 in 2007.
In recent times it has come to light that there have been a number of children forced to marry in arranged marriages in the UK and so legislation has been passed to increase the age in which people can marry to make it illegal in all circumstances to marry under the age of 18.
The Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act 2022 received Royal Assent and came into force in February 2023.
It is thought the change will help protect vulnerable children being exploited and manipulated and has been widely welcomed by charities, campaigners and politicians.
